Road figures are routed along the road network between the two points named; straight-line figures are the distance between the same points on the map.

The route by car
The routed drive from central Almaty follows four roads:
- Out of Almaty to the north-east and onto the Almaty to Khorgos highway (KAZ06), the main road east towards the Chinese border, for about 111.5 km.
- At Baiseit, near Shelek, onto the regional road KZ05-01 (Baiseit to Kokpek to Shonzhy) for about 46.5 km, through the village of Kokpek.
- After Kokpek, onto KZ05-06, the road from Kokpek to Kegen and the Kyrgyz border, for about 16.4 km.
- At the turn-off, signposted for the canyon, onto the access road for the last 11.0 km to the car park and visitor centre on the rim of the Valley of Castles.
The road numbers are those of Kazakhstan’s register of public roads; older maps and some park pages still use the earlier A-series numbers. The route planner puts the whole drive at a little over three hours without stops.

Without a car
There is no scheduled bus or official shuttle from Almaty to the canyon. The options are:
- An organised trip from Almaty, either a day trip to the Valley of Castles or a longer trip that adds the Kolsai and Kaindy lakes.
- A taxi or a hired driver for the day. Agree the waiting time at the canyon before you set off, and whether the fees are included.
- The long-distance bus as far as the main road. Sayran bus station’s daily route 424 to Karakol leaves at 10:00 and runs via Shelek and Kegen, but its timetable lists no stop for the canyon and the car park is still 11.0 km away, so it is not a practical way in.
At the canyon
The car park and the visitor centre sit on the rim at the top of the Valley of Castles. Pay the park fee before you go down: 865 tenge a person and 0.7 MCI (about 3,030 tenge) for a car in 2026, through the Kaspi.kz or Halyk Homebank apps or the park’s QR code (see the entrance fee). Private cars stop here: the park banned driving down into the canyon in 2019. You walk the 3 km route down to the river, or ride in the park’s transport for 865 tenge a seat each way. The Valley of Castles guide describes the walk.
Fuel and food
Fill up and buy water before you turn off the main road. The visitor centre at the car park has a café, and the rest area at the river serves food. Shonzhy, the district town where the park has its office, is 245.3 km by road from Almaty on the KZ05-01.
Going on to Kolsai and Kaindy
From the canyon, the road south via the Kegen road and Zhalanash reaches Saty, the village for the Kolsai and Kaindy lakes, after 89.2 km. From Almaty direct, Saty is 278.0 km by road. See Charyn, Kolsai and Kaindy in one trip.
